Hey there!

Welcome to Sa Happen; my weekly compilation of the major events that shaped conversations in Nigeria. You can expect some information on recent politics, policies, and controversies. You should totally expect some mischief too😉 .

Hi people!

Quick question please, do you currently have an employee that you need to sack? Because I heard that Nigerian courts are giving out sacks like biscuits.

So, last week, news reached Nigerians that the Court of Appeal in Abuja sacked the Governor, abi ex-Governor of Zamfara state. In fact, a re-run of elections in some local governments was ordered.

Former Gov. Dauda Lawal

They were not done, of course. The next course of action was to sack Gov. Abba Kabir aka Abba Gida Gida of Kano state too. In fact, they insist that Abba was not qualified to be a Governor, as he was not a part of the NNPP party at the time of the elections.

Former Gov. Abba Kabir Yusuf

So if you need someone sacked, you better head to the appeal court and soon too. Terms and conditions applied.

Meanwhile, let's dial back a bit to how the week actually started. The past week opened to the aftermath of elections in Bayelsa, Kogi and Imo states. yes there were cases of violence and rigging here and there. Alledged cases 😉 of course. My hand no dey o The icing on the cake however, the real drama of it all, was the what happened in Kogi state and Dino Melaye’s reaction.

My statesman, DIno Melaye

Dino Melaye called for a cancellation of the elections on allegations of vote tampering, result forging etc but get this; Dino Melaye did not in fact, go out to vote. How do you not vote for yourself?

Also, please, all alleged abeg. 🧎 Do not lift me into an area that I do not know or, no carry me go where I no know. Thank you.

Then we had the Nigerian Labour Congress- NLC strike that should not have started in the first place but was over before we knew it. Let’s not even get into that.

Outside of Nigeria (don’t worry, we will return) so much is going on that is picking the interest of the Giant of Africa.

First, a video of a Congolese man burning himself alive went viral. The story being circulated is that the man was protesting the genocide going on in DRC. Read this piece about Congo for a little context.

Secondly, the whispers of injustice are still loud in Sudan. Those whispers carry on to Palestine too. We must keep bearing witness as much as we can.

Now, back to Nigeria because Mikel John Obi nearly broke the Nigerian internet.

Mikel Obi

Are you one of those relatives who believe that the rich members of your family deserve to fund your life? Are you planning to have kids you cannot afford? Do you aspire to have another adult pay you through your laziness?

Then this week was against you, I am afraid. Mikel Obi went on a show to talk about black tax. And if you don’t know what black tax is, here you are.

The conversations that followed the players' comments on family members living off their wealthy relatives struck some cords and Nigerians have spent a good number of hours on this.

I’d love to hear your opinion about black tax in the comments. Also, did I miss anything major? Tell me.

See you in a couple of days!
